Darby Anne
And The Jay Jay Kay Trio

All Grown Up
Herbert Baker, Carrie Music Co. ASCAP

Darby 45-609
Ellettsville, Indiana
1957 or later

Presumably, "All Grown Up" is a cover of the song previously recorded by Debbie Reynolds MGM 12560 in 1957. Not much can be found on Darby Anne.  Only thing I known is she recorded another 45 on the same label, also a King custom pressing, backed by the Johnnie Wattles Orchestra  (Betwixt And Between , Darby 45-D3)

Mexican Pets - Nobody's Working Title ep (1994, Blunt)

front.jpgThis gem of a band/record breezed by my eyes not too long ago when I spotted some of their recordings on one of my file-sharing platforms of choice.  At the time I had no idea who Mexican Pets were, but the name must've caught my attention because before I knew it was downloading a folder of supposed "early demos," quite randomly at that.  Smart move on my part.  As it would soon become evident to me the Pets were a bygone Irish inde-rock outfit who to my sheer good luck wielded a penchant for meaningful songwriting couched in a distortion-savvy, albeit tuneful construct.  To this set of ears, similarities to one of their contemporaries in the opposite hemisphere, namely Australia's Glide, made for an enticingly pleasant surprise, though MP's likeness to the aforementioned was in all probability a sheer coincidence.  All of this aside, the songs on that demo spoke for themselves, drenched in bittersweet, melancholic sentiments, intermingled with melodic but fuzz-addled guitar swells (a la Swervedriver and early Dinosaur Jr.), all cloaked in a raw, mid-fidelity context that allowed the Pet's warm, analog hues to come bristling to life so genuinely.

The Pets' recordings never made it stateside, and the band folded by the late '90s, having only one proper album to their credit, HumbuckerNobody's Working Title is actually a consolidation of two earlier EPs, and those songs wound up on yet another future compilation.  A decent overview of their career can be accessed on Wikipedia, and hopefully there will be more to come regarding them in the not-too-distant future on these pages.

Improved Sound Limited - The Final Foreword (1966-73 germany, fabulous swinging beat psych kraut rock, 2003 remaster)

It is certainly correct, the quote from "Rolling Stone" in August 2002, that the eponymous double album (re-released as LHC 007) was the real debut album of Improved Sound Limited. Still, there were numerous notable releases of the band even before that, all of which have, in different ways, specific and unique "Improved" characteristics which make them forerunners of the future sound. This album attempts to document those early years, as the music developed out of the "beat" culture of the sixties, with some input from the eclectic styles of west coast, psychedelic and underground, before heading in the seventies toward progressive rock and expressive ballads.

Whereas CD No. 4, "Road Trax", contained primarily instrumental music for films by Wim Wenders and Erwin Keusch, CD No. 5 returns to vocals, in the band's chosen language of English, as in previous releases. In an article published on 15 April 1972 in the legendary "Melody Maker", Michael Watts wrote about German bands singing in English: "The most popular of these is 'Frumpy', who won a poll not long ago in a German magazine, but the most accomplished that I've heard is 'Improved Sound Limited'." Be that as it may, this album is both prologue and epilogue. But these pieces without opus numbers are anything but scorned rejects. They run the gamut from the short hidden track by the "Pyjamas Skiffle Group" (as the band called itself around 1961) to "The Very Last Waltz" from 2002. Incidentally, even in the skiffle days, the band's instruments were "Improved". As the photo shows, Johnny and Axel had already traded their standard four-string guitars for the six string electro Spanish variety. Rolf was never satisfied with a wash board as the usual drum ersatz; he had a Sonor drum kit. Only the less discriminating Uli stayed with a self-made, original tea box bass, with two strings of clothes line.

Improved Sound Limited released a total of four singles, two of which are on this CD: "It is You" and "Sing Your Song". The other two singles are not included here, for good reason. One had mono mixes of the nursery rhyme "Hoppe Hoppe Reiter" plus "I'm Exhausted" (the stereo versions are tracks 6 and 11). The fourth single contained rough mixes of "Oedipus" and "Where Will The Salmon Spawn" which are hardly different from the recordings on the eponymous double album LHC 007. Instead, I chose for this album the interesting original versions of both songs, as featured on the soundtrack of the TV show "Kommissar" in the episode "Dr. Meinhardt's Tragic End". Compare the audibly different atmosphere of the two versions.

The track list of "The Final Forward" starts with the band's very first single, "It Is You" (B side: "We Are Alone"). With "It Is You", Improved Sound Limited won the beat music competition of Bavarian Radio in 1966, and with it a recording contract. They garnered the most points from a jury including noted classical composer Werner Egk ("Abraxas") and soundtrack specialist Peter Thomas, as well as tumultuous applause (105 dB!) from the audience.

The single was then produced by Polydor's Gerhard Mendelson, who had tremendous success with the German language productions of Connie Francis, Rita Pavone, Gigliola Cinquetti, Gus Backus and Thomas Fritsch, among others. Unfortunately, the release came six months later, so the promotion effect of BR's airplay was lost. But "the beat goes on...".

Tracks 3 and 4, "Marvin Is Dead" and "Sing Your Song", are songs from the film "Der Bettenstudent", directed by Michael Verhoeven. Behind the snappy title is the bestselling novel "Und so was lebt", in which author Finn Søborg sends up bureaucrats and administrators. The cast was strong: Gila von Weitershausen, Hannelore Elsner, Karl Dall, Stella-Maria Adorf and Christof Wackernagel.

The next songs (tracks 5 to 12), from the film "Engelchen macht weiter - Hoppe hoppe Reiter" with Gila von Weitershausen and Mario Adorf, also resulted from the collaboration with Michael Verhoeven. Film producer Rob Houwer, who had made a deal with Rolling Stones guitarrist Brian Jones to do music for Volker Schlöndorff's film "Mord und Totschlag", was quite taken by the Improved Sounds and asked them for some music (see the booklet for the CD LHC 007). The success of the film, and also of the soundtrack LP and single on the Cornet label, would prove him right. On this CD are all significant pieces of music, omitting only smaller bits such as the backround music in a department store.
Rob Houwer himself remixed the music (four track was then state of the art) for the film and the soundtrack album. It was slightly different from the mix on this album, which sounds less commercial but is preferred by the band.

But getting back to Michael Verhoeven: he called on the "wonderful band from Nürnberg" (Verhoeven in the AZ, 11 Jan. 1969) for something special for an episode of the TV series "Kommissar" titled "Dr. Meinhardt's Tragic End". They gladly fulfilled his wishes, for example with a section reminiscent of Gainsbourg/Birkin in the middle of "Oedipus", or just a touch of Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade Of Pale" in the instrumental version of "Where Will The Salmon Spawn". Neither version has appeared before on any commercial recording. The same goes for the music for the TV series "Krempoli" (tracks 15 to 20), which was also directed by Michael Verhoeven and broadcast throughout Europe. Incidentally, a cameraman on the TV series was Joseph Vilsmaier, later himself a director of such internationally successful films as "Herbstmilch", "Stalingrad" and "Comedian Harmonists". The band immersed itself with enthusiasm and virtuosity in the series' plot and scenes, without sacrificing the unique "Improved" touch. For me, some tracks sound like early demos of songs on the "Road Trax" CD (LHC 017), for example "Down The Dusty Road", "Mexican Hat" or perhaps "Le fleuve tranquille". Also previously unreleased is the title song of a Fischer&Welz-/Kare-Kraus film called "Lass knacken, Ive", with an imaginative story and highly professional production in the tradition of the young Munich filmmakers. The cameraman was Peter Ettengruber, who edited Schlöndorff's film "Baal" starring Fassbinder in the title role. But the changing zeitgeist stood in the way of this film's success. What remains is the wonderful ballad "The Policeman", which with its mellifluence resonating in melancholy (please excuse the pathos!) could only come from one band: Improved Sound Limited.

The quartet built up a fine reputation as a live band. This makes it all the more unfortunate that I have been unable to locate any surviving recordings at the numerous sources contacted, for example a tape of their appearance at Constantin Film's German premiere of Andy Warhol's film "Trash" in Munich, at which the band was praised by Warhol and his star, Joe Dallessandro.

It is also sad that there are no recordings of their various works for the theater, which drew national attention. Improved Sound Limited provided the music for the German premiere of Fernando Arrabal's "Bella Ciao", by the director of the world premiere at the Théâtre National Populaire in Paris, Jorge Lavelli. The "Frankfurter Rundschau" wrote of an "important, stimulating evening of exciting theater. Improved Sound Limited, which led the tonal troupe in a show/revue which reminds somewhat of "Mahoganny", performed their own compositions just right for the theater." The "Abendzeitung" (Norbert Neudecker) noted "musical numbers which range from highly rhythmic, resonant sounds to schmalzy tango, all extremely attractive and thus appropriate in their ironic context." The "Weserkurier" (Rainer Wagner) reported that the "renowned pop group Improved Sound Limited wrote and played appealing and imaginative songs for this spectacle." The acerbic theater critic Hans Bertram Bock asserted in his review, "the band demonstrated with precision and in responsive collaboration with the other participants their brilliant abilities." The sheet music has survived, any tapes that may have been made have not. But I personally am happy and satisfied with the five CDs (a total of 84 tracks) we have assembled. Concerning the fifth one, I agree with the magazine "Sounds" (Nov. 1973): "Improved Sound Limited reminds at times of the late Beatles, at times of the Byrds. All their songs are very clearly crafted compositions, sound pleasantly fresh and still reflect a lot of experience."

I don't want to conclude my essay without sincere thanks to the band for their cooperation, and also for providing me with numerous recordings and photographs.  I am especially grateful to Johnny Fickert and Bernd and Axel Linstädt for fulfilling my request for a very special encore, "The Very Last Waltz", recorded in 2002. I like it just as much as the old "Improved" songs. I almost wrote "classics", because it seems the more I hear them, the more I like them. I think R.W. Schmidt wasn't far from the mark when he quoted Michael Verhoeven in the April 1969 issue of the then trendy magazine "twen": "These guys are in a class of their own in Germany." And I agree with both his overall opinion and with the last sentence of his article: "To paraphrase Richard Wagner, Improved Sound Limited are the ‚Meistersingers of Nürnberg'."

Piero Delle Monache: Road Movie [Live Music 2012-2017] (Da Vinci Jazz 2017)

cover.png

Belaynesh%2BWubante%2B%2526%2BAssegedetc  Thanks to the world wide web there are vast loads of great music to be mined. Browse for an obscure artist from far far away en within a split second you can find almost every kind of music.

That ofcourse is great. But it must be me getting old that i  sometimes long for the feeling i got in the old days when i found some exotic tape. On a flee market, in a shoarma joint or in the collection of new found friends...
I remember clearly, it was in the early 80's of last century, i was riding my bike home with two newfound borrowed Ethiopian cassettes burning in my pocket. My first Ethio tape ever was from the spectecular Tilahun Gessesse  and these two were a welcome addition to my small library of worldwide local music.

I rushed home to my tapedeck and nervously inserted the first treasure.  By Mahmud Ahmad  the cover said and later, when the songs appeared on vinyl, i found out it was  the legendary album Era Mela Mela. Still one of his best, in my opinion.

The other tape's sleeve was unreadable mostly thanks to my lack in formal Amharic education. But the music inside instantly blew my mind. Wow!! Two girls singing their heart out in front of a jazzy Ethiopian combo. So i called them 'the Addis Sisters'.
Belaynesh%2BWubante%2B%2526%2BAssegedetc

In the following years i only once found another Addis Sisters' tape on line, i forgot which blog (sorry). They sung together with an electronic organ in a very empty room. Nice but not great.

Recently i was visiting this fine blog about Ethiopian music and  look! The Addis Sisters with a 45 rpm 'Alemiya'  and 'Gubiliye'.  Really cool stuff. And what's even better: i finally got to know their names: Belaynesh Wubante & Assegedetch Asfaw.

Problably i will stick to the Addis Sisters for some time, old habit.  But while  the 45 rpm might be cool, the cassette i offer you today is really hot! That's not bragging, because i had no part in it.
Okay, best take them both down!

Dankzij het wereldwijde web zijn er gigantische hoeveelheden muziek te mijnen. Tik een obscure artiest van heel ver weg in je zoekmachine en een fractie van een seconde later vind je bijna alle soorten muziek.
Belaynesh%2BWubante%2B%2526%2BAssegedetc
listen to this 45rpm in the clip below

Mr. Do It Yourself

A funny song recorded by Jean Shepard and Ray Pillow. These two recorded an album together from which the hit single, “I’ll Take the Dog” acts out how the dog saved a couple’s marriage. Shepard had one of her biggest hits later the same year with “Many Happy Hangovers to You.” The duo never recorded together again, and Pillow never found the same level of commercial success.

“Mr. Do It Yourself” is about a handyman who can’t get things right, and features some fun sound effects.

Jean Shepard passed away two years ago, at which time she was the longest-living member of the Grand Ole Opry. Her legendary career in country music was recounted in her 2015 biography Down Through the Years.

Ray Pillow is eighty years old and still singing. He released a CD on his own label last year which is available through his website but we couldn’t get it to load this morning (here).

The rarest of the Joey Delmar two singles produced in 1962 by B & L Productions (Frank Bendinelli and Lee Leroy Lovett) and one of their earliest, before Patty & The Emblems (1964)
Musician-producer-songwriters Frank Bendinelli and Leroy Lovett formed a production company, Ben-Lee Music, that generated tracks that were leased to other labels, as well as sides that were put out on their own small Philadelphia labels, like Benn-X and Sonata. The exact routes (whereby each side got placed where) are painstaking to trace nowadays; all the lay fan needs to know is that the Ben-Lee umbrella produced obscure Philadelphia soul throughout the decade. Twenty-four of their 1963-68 efforts were collected by the Kent Soul label (Ben-Lee's Philadelphia Story , 1999).

The other single on Joey Delmar, issued on Britone 1001 (Friendship Seven / Happiness) is available on YouTube

Robert George Pickett (February 11, 1938 – April 25, 2007), known by the pen name Bobby "Boris" Pickett, was an American singer, best known for co-writing and performing the 1962 hit novelty song "Monster Mash."

Bobby was fascinated by horror movies as a child. By the time he was nine, he started to imitate Boris Karloff, whom he would see at the movie theatre that his father managed in Somerville, Massachusetts. Following his discharge from the US Army in 1961, he moved to Los Angeles to try his hand at show business. As a bobby-pickett-news.jpgmember of a vocal group called The Cordials he would do impersonations between songs, often using his impression of Karloff, which was a crowd favourite.

His friend and fellow band mate, Lenny Capizi suggested that the pair try to take advantage of the novelty song craze that was happening in the early sixties by writing a tune around Bobby's Karloff imitation. It took nearly a year after the suggestion to get around to it, but when they did, the two worked out "The Monster Mash" in about a half an hour.

To record their song they approached producer Gary Paxton, who sang The Hollywood Argyles' 1960 number one hit, "Alley Oop". untitle8d.pngPickett and Paxton, along with Leon Russell, Johnny McCrae and Rickie Page recorded the tune in one take, and when the session was done, it was Paxton who came up with the idea of putting "Bobby 'Boris' Pickett And The Cryptkickers" on the record's label. Pickett also added all his own sound effects: the creaky door opening is a nail being pulled from a piece of wood, the boiling cauldron is Pickett blowing bubbles into a cup of water with a straw, and the chains are him moving chains up and down.

Gary Paxton took the tape to four major labels, who all turned it down. Not discouraged, he had a thousand copies pressed himself and started delivering them to radio stations across California. Soon, "The Monster Mash" was getting air play and London Records, who had rejected the song earlier, called Paxton to sign a deal. Eight weeks later, on October 20, 1962, the record hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, just in time for Halloween.

Over the years, the song has been re-released three times and re-entered the Hot 100 on August 29, 1970, peaking at number 91 and again in May of 1972, when it reached number 10. Several attempts were made at other "monster" songs. A Christmas-themed follow-up called "Monster's Holiday" was also issued in 1962 and reached #30 in December of that year. "Blood Bank Blues", "Werewolf Watusi" and "Monster Swim" followed, but all failed to chart. Pickett did manage to reach the Billboard chart again in June, 1963 when "Graduation Day" peaked at #80. In 1975, he recorded a spoof on Star Trek called "Star Drek" with Peter Ferrara. In 1985 he released "Monster Rap", which describes the mad scientist's frustration at being unable to teach his creation how to talk. The problem is solved when the monster learns to rap.

Bobby-Pickett-billboard-bw-1548.jpg"The Monster Mash" has been the recipient of three Gold records, selling an estimated 4 million copies since its release, and is one of only three records to ever hit the Billboard Hot 100 on three separate occasions. The song has become a part of American pop culture, so much so, that it has even been played to wake up the astronauts on Halloween Day. The song has been used in several movies, including Sweetheart's Dance and "Halloween III and has been heard on such popular TV shows as The Simpsons, Cheers, Rosanne, Doogie Howser, Happy Days, and Sesame Street. Even Boris Karloff himself sang the song on mid-sixties TV.

As for Bobby, he remained in demand for Halloween performancesmonsterslash.jpg and continued to tour at small venues and special events throughout the US. In 1966 he hosted a weekly disc jockey show on KRLA in Los Angeles and later worked as a writer and an actor, appearing in the films It's a Bikini World in 1967, Chrome and Hot Leather in 1971, Deathmaster in 1972 and Lobster Man From Mars in 1989.

Pickett and television author Sheldon Allman wrote the musical Frankenstein Unbound. In 1995 the co-writers of Disney's Toy Story, Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow, produced a movie of it, originally entitled Frankenstein Sings, but later released in the US under Monster Mash: The Movie in which Pickett starred.

In 2005 Pickett published his autobiography called Monster Mash: Half Dead in Hollywood. Bobby performed his final gig in November, 2006 and died of leukemia on April 25th, 2007, at the age of 69.  (Info mainly edited from classicbands.com bio)
